Use TimeMachine to make emergency local backups

So I want to create a few local snapshots as an source for emergency
restorations. These are not intended to be the perfect long-lasting option, but
instead something that can be fully automatic and hands-off but still there for
short-term fixes.

TimeMachine is that option, and is very well integrated into MacOS. So what will
it do? It will automatically create hourly snapshots when it can’t reach the
configured destination. And those snapshots will only last for 24 hours.
Again, perfect for recent emergencies but not a replacement for a complete
solution.

TimeMachine can be used as that complete solution as well, configure an external
drive or machine as the actual destination rather than the fake one this doc
will make.

This comes from this super useful StackOverflow answer.

  1. Create a sparse bundle in Disk Utility
  2. Then configure TimeMachine to back up to that bundle (CLI: sudo tmutil setdestination /Volumes/TimeMachine)
  3. Eject the volume via Finder so that it doesn’t actually get used
  4. Delete the file representing the sparse bundle
  5. Make sure that TimeMachine is configured to automatically run
  6. After a few hours, verify there are snapshots: tmutil listlocalsnapshots /
